UNB, Dhaka :
Visiting Danish Minister for Employment Jørn Neergaard Larsen on Tuesday said improved working conditions in the readymade garment sector can be the ‘foundation’ for higher prices and bigger markets for its products.
Bangladesh has been calling for foreign brands sourcing from the country’s RMG sector to pay higher prices reflecting the huge investment in the sector’s reform process.
“Better working conditions can create bigger market, better products and better prices,” Larsen told reporters at a joint press conference at a city hotel after signing the Strategic Sector Cooperation Project between Bangladesh and Denmark to improve Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) in the RMG sector here.
State Minister for Labour and Employment, Md. Mujibul Haque and Danish Ambassador in Dhaka Hanne Fugl Eskjær, among others,
spoke at the press conference.
The cooperative project titled “Improving Health and Safety of Workers in Bangladesh through the Strengthening of Labour Authorities” is a three-year partnership between the Danish Employment Ministry and Bangladesh’s Labour Ministry, in cooperation with stakeholders from both countries.
Responding to a question, the Danish Minister said consumers in Denmark like other developed countries give high priority to the working conditions in which the goods they consume are produced.
Besides, better working conditions can be great for boosting productivity and it helps open up new markets.
“The combination of bigger and better market and better productivity can bring better prices for products,” Larsen said, appreciating the progress made so far in Bangladesh.
He however did say that a lot still remains to be done, and Denmark will continue to work with Bangladesh in this regard.
