State Minister for Labour and Employment M Mujibul Haque Chunnu on Thursday said the
country’s readymade garment (RMG) sector has 540 registered trade unions.
“Right to trade union is a fundamental right of workers. The present government is a workers friendly administration and it has made easier the registration of trade unions,” Chunnu said this while replying to a starred question from treasury bench member M Abdullah of Luxmipur-4 in the Jatiya Sangsad.
The state minister said the government has formed the ‘Workers Welfare Foundation Fund’ and Taka 190 crore was deposited with the fund in the meantime. The fund is being spent for welfare of the workers, he added.
He informed the House that the Labour and Employment Ministry has undertaken various welfare oriented measures to ensure due remuneration of the workers at mills and factories.
“”The ministry has re-fixed minimum wages in 38 industry sectors out of the total 42 as per recommendations of the Minimum Wage Board under the Labour and Employment Ministry,” Chunnu said.
