Rangpur Medical College and Hospital [RMCH] was closed on Wednesday for an indefinite period following a clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League [BCL] leaving 10 people injured.
The residential students were directed to vacate their dormitories by 3:00pm yesterday, Dr Zakir Hossain, Principal of the medical college, said.
He said that the decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the academic council of the college to evade further trouble on campus.
“Earlier in the day, college authorities held a meeting with both factions of BCL. But the meeting ended without any reconciliation,” the Principal said.
Sources said that the clash began around 5:00am when one Sarwar, an expelled BCL activist, along with his supporters attacked Shahiduzzaman Shahid, BCL President of Rangpur Medical College Unit and his followers at college dormitory.
The attackers vandalised four rooms of Dr Mukta Chhatrabas.
The clash left 10 BCL activists, including Asad, his brother Shahid and Ashik Ferdaus critically injured.
Shahid, Ashik and Ferdaus are now undergoing treatment at hospital while the rest received primary aid.
A large number of police personnel have been deployed on the campus to avoid further untoward incidents.
