UNB, Dhaka :
The High Court on Tuesday granted an interim bail for six months to BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi in eight more cases filed against him in connection with street violence.
An HC bench comprising Justice AKM Abdul Hakim and Justice Ashish Ranjan Das passed the order after a hearing on the BNP leader’s bail petition.
Of the eight cases, three were filed with Paltan Police Station, while two with Jatrabari Police Station, and one each with Mirpur, Mohammadpur and Khilgaon police
stations against Rizvi on charge of carrying out subversive activities, including vandalising and torching vehicles and hurling crude bombs.
Rizvi’s Lawyer Sagir Hossain Leon said the BNP leader has so far secured bail in 17 cases filed against him this year. However, the government has appealed with the Appellate Division against the HC order awarding him bail in four cases on July 1.
“So, he (Rizvi) is unlikely to be released before he gets bail in the more cases and disposal of the appeal against his bail,” Sagir added.
Amid the BNP’s non-stop countrywide transport blockade, members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Rizvi from a house in the city’ s Baridhara area on January 31.
Earlier on July 4, BNP in a statement claimed that their party joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi was seriously ill and demanded the government immediately release him on bail considering his deteriorating health condition.
Meanwhile, the same HC bench also granted an interim bail to BNP chairperson’s adviser Shamsuzzaman Dudu in seven cases after hearing on his bail petition.
Of the seven cases, six were filed with Platan Police Station while the other with Mirpur Police Station.
Sagir Hossain Leon said there is no legal bar to the release of Dudu as he secured bail in all the cases filed against him.
