More than 14-hour long heavy monsoon downpour paralyzed normal life in Barisal city on Saturday.
River communication disrupted with different areas and people demanded construction of town protection dam, excavating the canals and introducing sustainable scientific drainage and swearage systems to solve water logging problem in the city.
Barisal River Port authourity suspened operations of ML ( less than 65-feet long) water transports on the river routes from this port, informed Md. Shahidullah, Barisal river port officer and deputy director Bangladesh Inland water Transport Authority.
The action was taken after weather signal no. 2 hoisted in the port form Saturday morning and will cntinue till improvement of the weather condition, the BIWTA official said
Barisal citizens faced torrential rainfall started from about 12:00 am early Saturday and continued till 2:00 pm with short breaks.
Till this report the city sky was covered by deep cloud and light to mid-raged raining continueed with breaks.
Local met office recorded amount of rain fall as 106.6 milimeter within last 24-hour till Saturday 3:00 PM.
The city-sky will remain cloudy with mid to heavy ranged raining and gusty wind with 15-20 Km per hour for next one or two days, local weather forecast told. Most of the people on Saturday became bound to confine themselves inside the room as transports became scarce on city roads demanding higher-fare from the passengers, after visiting the city areas found.
Make shift shops, hawker markets remained close in most of the parts of the day and kitchen markets facing very few customers as people not coming out from home without emergency needs.
Sylhet Correspondent adds: Overnight rain on Saturday in Sylhet led to water-logging as many areas of the city and district went under knee-deep to waist-deep water.
People waded through waist-deep filthy water to reach their respective destinations as vehicular movement came to a halt, leaving rickshaws as the only option for commuting.
Important areas such as Pathapara, Hawapara, Mirabazar, Shibjong, Subidbazar, Amborkhana, Ponitula, Ghashitula were submerged. The Sylhet Met office recorded 126.2 milliliters rainfall during the last 24 hours, till Saturday 3:00pm,
Alimul Islam, resident of Hawapara residential area, reached his office after he agreed to pay the rickshaw-puller Tk 100 for a distance of only two kilometres.
