About three thousand families of ten villages under Kamalganj Municipal of Moulvibazar district have been passing their days in panic fearing losing of their land and homesteads.
Dhalai and Laghata River have turned furious in 20 different points for the last couple of days.
Hilly water has already washed away crops on 60 hectares of land in the municipal and unions.
According to Mayor office, affected villages are : Gupalnagor, Karimpur, Nagra, Bidhapur, Alepur, Uttar Kumrakapon, Dakhin Kumrakapon, Rampasa, Gobordhanpur and Borgash area under Kamalganj Municipal under Moulvibazar district.
The local administration did not construct the damaged portions of the embankments yet.
If immediate steps were not taken to repair the damaged parts, the entire embankment would be devoured by the Dhalai River in the season, feared the villagers.
This correspondent found families of Gupalnagor village are facing threat of erosion as the river was flowing just above its danger level near the embankment.
About 13 houses were washed away due to collapsed embankments in different time in Kumrakapon village, said Mujibur Rahman, former counselor of the area and inhabitant of Uttor Kumrakapon village.
We could not cultivate our land in the last years as saline water entered into the croplands during the rainy season, Modorish Miah, farmer of Gupalnagor village.
Jalal Ahmed, 45, said he hasn’t slept in days fearing collapses.
Nasir Uddin of the village who took shelter with his family on the embankment expressed deep concern.
Pushpo Kumar Kanu, Chairman of Madhapur Union Parishad under Kamalganj Upazila said, five points including Hiramoti and Shukur Ullah Gaon village point have become risky.
Md. Jewel Ahmed, Mayor , Kamalganj Municipal said, the Municipal has not enough budget for repairing embankments of Dhalai and Laghata River.
“He said, if immediate steps were not taken to repair the damaged parts, this village may be devoured very soon.
Md. Ashaduzzaman, Project Implementation Officer of Kamalganj said, I visited some risky points with Executive Engineer of WDB, Moulvibazar. Its needs to immediate repair.
When contacted, Md. Foizur Rob, Executive Engineer of WDB, Moulvibazar, said Dhalai River was flowing danger level.
He said, I visited Dhalai and Laghata River risky points recently.
