River erosion renders 300 families homeless in Kurigram

The mighty Brahmaputra river is eroding and engulfed at least 300 families at Rajibpur Upazila in Kurigram district within the last few days.
Water level of the river Brahmaputra rises suddenly causing river erosion is going on and at least 300 families have been rendered homeless.
The erosion continues about four ilometer area at Nayarchar area under Rajibpur upazila. Two villages Nayarchar Uttarpara and Nayarchar Munshipara have already been eroded fully.
The erosion is going on at Deara Hazipara,Nayarchar Pachchim Goalpara, Nayarchar Bazzarpara and Nayarchar Sankorkurpara. My house eroded 17 times earlier, said Baser Ali 70 of village Nayarhat bazaar para who was busy to remove his house to safer place. Asma Begum 50 a widow told that I have only one room which I am removing to another place as the river is eroding here.The river has been eroding here as sudden for the last six days.Chairman of Mohonganj union council Anwar Hossain Amu told this correspondent that Nayarchar Haat, Post office, three educational institutes including union parishad is being threatened. The river is far from these infrastructures are only 500 meter. The river erosion victims took shelter on the road side as well as their respective relative’s houses.
Most of the people are poor causing food crisis is prevailing among them. Vice chairman of Rajibpur Upazila Parishad Bilkiss Begum said if no measure is taken to protect erosion, Nayarchar Bazzar,Union council building, Nayarchar Islamia Madrasha,Nayarchar Govt. Primary School, bazzar and infrastructures in the bazar may be eroded. The matter was informer to concern to Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Deputy Commissioner.Peoples of all walks of life formed human chain at Rajibpur upazila demanding to take necessary measures to protect river erosion recently.
Executive Engineer of Kurigram Water Development Abu Taher told that there is no project to protect erosion at Nayarhar area but a project of protection of Rajibpur upazila from the Brahmaputra river erosion is submitted to ministry concerned which is not approved. In addition some projects are implemented as urgent basis. Bamboo piling may be set up under the project, he added.
 On the other hand, the Teesta river is eroding at Dangrarhar Taiyab Kha under Rajarhat upazila. The erosion is going on in about half kilometer area on the river side. The villagers set up bamboo piling several times but in vain. The river side people are being frustrated.
