The capital city Dhaka can be easily named as the ‘city of motorcycles’. Though the experts have suggested controlling the two-wheeler as it is a ‘very risky mode of transportation, the number of motorcycles has been doubled in Dhaka over the last decade. Especially when ride-sharing companies, particularly Uber and Pathao, introduced their bike services in Dhaka; hundreds of newcomers joined the row to earn some extra money.
With the introduction of commercial services, the risky drive and desperate competition among the bikers have also been increased due to saving time and fuel. Several people along with the riders have lost their lives in fatal road accidents. But the scenario has not yet changed.
The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority said the number of registered motorcycles increased to 4,69,888 in April 2018 from 2,10,081 in 2010. No doubt, a few more thousand new motorbikes have joined the road since May to this November. About 75,251 motorcycles were registered with the BRTA in 2017. We think, the number would further increase next year. The photo was taken from VIP Road at Kakrail in the city on Tuesday.
