Several thousand people on the bank of Teesta River have been marooned by the recent flood in all Upazilas of Lalmonirhat district.
The Teesta River is flowing above the danger level due to the onrush of upstream flood water and rains, flooding the low lying areas in Patgram, Hatibandha, Kaliganj, Atidmari and Sadar Upazila of the district.
The water at Dalia point was flowing 10cm above the danger level on Friday while it was 20cm on Thursday. As a result, the water is entering the low lying areas and people are searching for dry places to save their lives and movable properties.
Aditmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer GR Sarwar said that the administration has been maintain round-the-clock surveillance of the flood affected people.
He hoped that the water would recede in a few days.
The flood has emerged due to the swelling up of the Teesta River, Mizanur Rahman, Executive Engineer of Lalmonirhat Water Development Board said.
He informed that they have all preparations in this regard.
On the other hand, more than one thousand families in the Gangachara Upazila in Rangpur district have been marooned by the rise of Teesta water due to the onrush of hill water from India.
The district Water Development Board forecast that moderate to heavy rain in Sikkim and Gangtak of India in the upcoming 48 hours. As a result, the water level in the Teesta will increase, with the apprehension of flooding the low lying areas, it added.
Four unions – Laxmitari, Kolkondo, Nohali and Alambiditar – of Gangachara Upazila have been flooded, affecting more than one thousand families in the Charland unions. Many of them are rushing for dry places for safety.
Some of the affected people said that the Teesta water began to increase from Thursday night and many dry areas including Charlands have been flooded on Friday.
They said that the situation will deteriorate if the water level continues to rise.
The Teesta River is flowing 10 cm above the danger level due to mountain runoff and heavy rains in Rangpur.
The Bangladesh Water Development Board recorded the overflow at Teesta’s Dalia point around 9 am on Friday, said Asaf-ud-Daula, the executive engineer at BWDB’s Rangpur wing, reports bdnews24.com
The Teesta started to overflow slightly on Wednesday night and it surpassed the danger level around 3 pm on Thursday, flooding low-lying areas around the river. Laxmitari, Mohipur Chhalapak and Maraneya unions in the district’s Gangachara Upazila have already been inundated.
The fifth wave of flooding in Gangachara and Kaunia Upazila has put millions of people at risk. The locals are trying to save their valuables before being marooned by floods due to the rise in the water level.
Abdul Hadi, a Union Parishad chairman of Laxmitari Union, said a total of 700 families have been affected by the floods in his area near Joyram and Bagher Haat shelter centres.
“Moderate to heavy is likely to cover in the upstream parts (Sikkim, Gangtok) of Teesta in the next 24 to 48 hours. The water level on Teesta may rise further and flow above the danger level again at Dalia point,” BWDB official Asaf said.
The authorities are observing the situation and have opened 44 sluice gates to control the overflow.
