Rising of food price hit hard people: DRI

Both urban and rural poor people suffer due to rising of food prices in recent years, a research report said.
The people of low income group cannot arrange good quality of be food cause of high price.
Development Research Initiative (DRI) has revealed the research report recently on the basis of three years research output with help of Institutes of Development Studies (IDS) of University of Sussex, UK from 2012-2014 around Dhaka, Khulna and Naogaon.
DRI consultant Dr. Ferdous Jahan said, a large number of rural people are still deprived from many basic needs like food security, education and health services in the country.
Poor people can not arrange protein rich quality food for their family as prices of food has been rising in the recent years, he said.
Dr. Jahan also said, in this context, the vulnerability of rural poor is more than urban poor because of absence of different supportive NGO and government activities.
Besides Dr. Ferdous Jahan, IDS Research Fellow Dr. Naomi Hossain said, “food price volatility in Bangladesh influences to change people’s food habits and adaptation and it impacts badly both urban and rural poor livelihood in Bangladesh”.
DRI arranged a seminar in the city on Friday on ‘life in a time of food price volatility’ on the basis of the research output.

Sangstha (NBUS) Secretary Hannan Akon sharing his experiences of living in an urban poor settlement said, “Food price volatility is one of the major challenge for urban poor livelihood which has forced urban poor to take poor quality of food and it is the main reason of massive health crises of urban poor”.
In the seminar, academicians, NGO experts and community participants found multi level policy gap of increasing food price day by day in Bangladesh. Through the seminar, participants suggested different policy forwarding to mitigate the challenges including governmental and non-governmental coordination, promotion of social movement and action research interventions for rural and urban poor in Bangladesh.
