Right to Information imperative to empower mass-people

Speakers at a discussion viewed that full-length implementation of the Right to Information (RTI) law is very important for empowering the public side by side with making all the public services transparent and accountable.
Unhindered flow of information by all government and non-government organizations concerned needs to be ensured for expediting development and ensuring good governance.
The observations came at the inaugural session of a daylong ‘Information Fair and Anti-corruption Cultural Function-2016″ held at Green Plaza of Rajshahi City Corporation marking the International Right to Information Day-2016.
District Administration, District Information Office and Committee for Conscious Citizens (CCC) jointly organized the event today aims at sensitizing the public in general about aspects of RTI along with its implementing strategies.
Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Kazi Ashraf Uddin and Superintendent of Police Syed Moazzem Hossain addressed the session as the chief and special guests respectively with CCC President Prof Abdus Salam in the chair.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Md Salahuddin and Principal of Rajshahi College Prof Habibur Rahman also spoke. Deputy Director of Department of Information Md Shamsuzzaman welcomed the audience.
In his remarks, the chief guest said the government is very much confident and working relentlessly for successful implementation of the law. The field level government and non-government officials concerned need be positive to supplement the government effort.
As long as the law is not implemented by the government and non- government organizations, its strength, weaknesses, limitations and appropriateness cannot be ascertained.
During her concept paper presentation, Prof Tanzima Johra Habib from Department of Social Work of Rajshahi University, said there is no alternative to enforce the law substantially to ensure the people’s participation in nation building process.
“Implementation of RTI Law has become indispensable for the sake of establishing good governance in the society and enhancing transparency and accountability in all tiers of public services,” she defined.
Proactive disclosure of information regarding all development works at the grassroots can ensure proper utilisation of resources and put a check on corruption, Prof Johra Habib mentioned.
She observed that the designated officials of the information-giving government and non-government organisations have a vital role to play.
Some 34 government and non-government organisations took part in the fair showcasing their respective service-delivery relating information.
