Police in a 14-hour drive recovered the stolen scooter of Shahnaz Akter Putul, a female biker, who went viral on various social media plaforms, from Raghunathpur in Narayanganj district on Wednesday morning.
She became a social media sensation for her struggle and determination to struggle for her family by offering ridesharing services; regardless of genders. Her scooter was reportedly stolen from capital’s Manik Mia Avenue.
Police arrested the suspected thief, Zubaidul Islam alias Sujon, 26, hailed from Narayanganj, police said.
A Dhaka court on Wednesday evening put him (Zubaidul) on two-day remand for interrogation in connection with the bike theft, court sources said.
Biplob Kumar Sarkar, Deputy Commissioner of Tejgaon Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), told the reporters in his office on Wednesday afternoon.
“A Police team has already started investigating the theft incident soon after Shahnaz filed a general diary (GD) at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police station. We wanted to recover her scooter as soon as we could as this is the primary source of income for
Shahnaz and her family,” the police official said.
“We used advanced technology to locate the scooter and identify the thief,” the DC said.
“The thief himself is a ridesharing biker. He has been stealing motorbikes and scooters for quite some time. The necessary steps will be taken upon further investigation,” he said.
We have paid Tk 10,000 to Shahnaj for nursing her two daughters, the DC added.
Shahnaz Akter thanked the police and the media for helping her find the scooter. On Tuesday, her scooter was stolen from Dhaka’s Manik Mia Avenue.
Abu Taiyeb, the Coordinator of the bike recovery and DMP Tejgaon Zone Assistant Commissioner, said the bike was recovered from Fatulla in Narayanganj early Wednesday.
The youth stole the bike from city’s Khamarbari area on Tuesday playing a trick on Shahnaj who hailed from Shariayput district and grew in city’s Mirpur. Later,the bike owner lodged a complaint with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police.
DMP’s Tejgaon Zone police in a facebook post informed the recovery of the bike and detention of the thief.
The post also said, “Shahnaj promised not to take off her helmet until the recovery of the scooty. Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police recovered the bike within 14 hours of the complaint.”
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) GG Biswas of the police station said, “The struggle of Shahanaj, a single mother of two daughters, came to limelight when her story was posted on Facebook by online activist Rafiuzzaman Sifat. The post has been shared nearly 10,000 times higher, with many hailing her courage and determination.”
