Rickshaw-puller Raju Orao strangulated a female passenger to death by pressing her head into the mud in a road side water body to ‘hijack’ money from her possession in Chandipur under Hili Municipal in Dinajpur district on August 9.
The deceased has been identified as Sharmin Akhter, 28. She used to work in a garment factory in Dhaka, reports our Dinajpur Correspondent quoting police.
Meanwhile, Police in a drive arrested the killer Raju Orao from Santal Palli in Chandipur early Monday.
The law enforcing members also recovered Sharmin’s bag from Raju Orao’s house during the drive, said Anwar Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hakimpur Police Station.
“Sharmin came to Hili from Dhaka by a bus and took a rickshaw driven by Raju on August 9. Later, he took Sharmin near a water body and then strangulated her to ensure her death. Raju also pressed her head into the mud and left her.”
“We managed to identify Raju with the help of local people and footage from nearby areas of the bus depot,” the OC said.
Razu sent to jail as per court order after hearing a case filed by Sharmin’s father, he said.
Raju told the police on Monday, “I took a loan of Tk 30000 from Grameen Bank to buy a rickshaw and the weekly instalment is Tk 850, which was a burden when I saw the girl on Friday morning with a bag, I thought she is carrying money. I took her to a road which does not have CCTV cameras and then to take the bag strangulated her.”
