Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day was observed in different districts in a befitting manner paying rich tributes to the language martyrs on Sunday. The Day was observed through various programmes chalked out by different government and non-government offices, social, political and cultural organisations and educational institutions. Sylhet Correspondent says : The Immortal Ekushey February and International Mother Language Day was observed in Sylhet city as elsewhere of the country on Sunday in a befitting manner paying of glowing tributes to the memories of the language movement martyrs.
Different socio-cultural, political organisations, educational institutions, professional groups and district administrations chalked out various programmes to observe the Day.
The programmes include placing of floral wreaths at Shaheed Minar, hoisting of national flags at half-mast atop all public and private buildings and morning procession.
There were miniature national flags and colored flags inscribed with Bengali alphabets throughout the city streets. Multifarious programmes like Quran Khwani and discussion at the Imam Training Academy, art and literary competitions for school and college students at Shishu Academy and Shilpakala Academy, serving improved diets to the inmates of hospitals, jails, safe homes and baby homes and screening of documentary films on the Language Movement were also organised in the city.
Various political parties and socio-cultural and volunteer organisations and educational institutions observed the day with a renewed pledge for building a happy, prosperous and non-communal Bangladesh.
Language veterans were accorded a reception on the occasion. Besides, a discussion and cultural function was organised at the auditorium of Shilpakala Academy.
The Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) has taken up elaborate programmes in observance of the day. Leaders of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangshad, Awami League (AL) and other political parties, professional organisations and common people placed wreaths there to pay homage to the Language Movement Martyrs.
Gouripur( Mymensingh) Correspondent reports: Amar Ekushey was observed in Gouripur upazila of Mymensingh district in a befitting manner on February 21, 2016 .
The beginning of Amar Ekushey, the Language Martyrs’ Day started at zero hours of midnight, Dur-e-Shahwaz, UNO of Gouripur upazila, Syed Rafiqul Islam, Mayor of Gouripur Pourashava and other officials of the upazila administration and the police department, members of Gouripur Reporters Club, local political leaders, freedom fighters and students of different educational institutions and Gouripur Press Club placed floral wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar of the upazila town.
Soon the Central Shaheed Minar was bedecked with flowers and wreaths. Volunteers and councilors of Gouripur Pourashava spent a hard night tackling the streams of people who lined up in a long queue for their turn to place wreaths at the Minar
In the morning, different organisations -singing in chorus the song of Amar Ekushey and carrying banners and placards, to pay homage to the language martyrs which paraded through the main roads of the town and joined. to the Central Shaheed Minar
Besides, different political parties, socio-cultural and professional bodies as well as institutions observed Amar Ekushey and the International Mother Language Day with elaborate programmes throughout the day.
Bagerhat Correspondent says: Amar Ekushey, the Language Marty’s Day and International Mother Language Day was observed in Bagerhat district and its all the nine upazilas in a befitting manner in commemorating those who sacrificed their lives on this day in the year 1952 for the recognition of Bangla as one of the state languages in the erstwhile Pakistan.

Narsingdi Correspondent reports: The people of Narsingdi on Sunday paid rich tributes to the language martyrs in observance of the immortal February recalling their outstanding contribution for establishing Bangla as the state language.
Countless people from all walks of life on barefoot placed wreaths at the separate Shaheed Minars of the district since the zero hour of Sunday.
Deputy Commissioner of Narsingdi Abu Hena Morshed Zaman was the first man to place wreath at Shaheed Minar adjacent at Muslehuddin Bhuiyan Stadium to pay homage to the memories of the martyrs of the Language Movemennt followed by the members of Narsingdi pressclub, government and non-government officials and different political leaders.
Principal of Narsingdi Government College Shirajul Islam, teachers of the college, leaders of district Awami League and Chattra League and members of Narsingdi Sangbadpatra Parishad placed floral wreaths and flowers at the alter of Government College Shaheed Minar.
Jhenaidah Correspondent says: Language Martyrs Day as well as the International Mother Language Day was observed in Jhenaidah with a due solemnity on Sunday. Thousands of people paid their deep homage to the martyrs of the historic language movement by placing wreaths at the Shaheed Minar in different places of the district at 12:01 AM.
People from all walks of life also reached the Shahid Minar barefooted and placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar singing the chorus ‘Amar Bhaiyer Rakte Rangano Ekushey February, Ami ki Bhulite Pari’. They also stood for a minute in silence.
Deputy ommissioner Mahbub Alam Talukdar, with Shaon Mahmud and Jhenaidah Municipality Mayor Saidul Karim Mintu paid homage to language movement martyrs placing floral wreaths at the newly built Shaheed Minar in the first hour of the day.
Gafargaon (Mymensingh) Correspondent reports: A 5-day long Amar Ekushey Book Fair began at Gafargaon on Friday. Gafargaon Press Club arranged the book fair.
Local MP Fahami Golandaz Babel was the chief guest. Mustakim Billah Faroki inagurated this book Fair. Upazila Parishad Chairman Md. Asraf Uddin Badal ,UNO Shiddartha Shonkor Kundu,Iswargonj UNO Rajib Kumar Sarker, Asst. Commissioner of (Land) Sheikh Shamsul Arefin , Abdullah Al Amin Biplob, Masud Hossain Sohel were also present in the fair. RU Correspondent says: Rajshahi University (RU) observed the Amar Ekushey and the International Mother Language Day in a befitting manner on the campus on Sunday.
RU VC Prof Muhammad Uddin Ahmed along with the officials of the university placed wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar on the campus at 12.1 am. RU Pro-VC Prof Chawdhury Sarwar Jahan, Treasurer Prof Sayen Uddin Ahmed and Register Prof Md. Entazul Haque were also present at this time. They also observed one minute silent.
