Rice procurement drive facing setback in Sylhet

Sylhet Correspondent :
The much-desired rice procurement drive of the government has been suffering setback in the Sylhet division this season since the region had suffered severe floods this year. Although it is set to be concluded by August 31, there is no chance of success of the programme, as the region had lost almost 95 per cent Boro crops in the Sunamagnj district while the other districts also suffered much.
This is why only 45 millers out of 482 listed, had signed contracts with the food department for supplying 1358 tonnes of rice from four districts whereas the target was set for 11,530 tonnes. The other millers even on repeated requests from the food department, didn’t respond that way for signing contracts, said the food officials.
Of the total, only 2 millers out of 85 in Sylhet district signed contracts while it is 36 against a total of 49 in Moulvibazar and only 7 in the district of Sunamganj against the total 270. None among the 78 millers in Habiganj responded to sign contract. The food department could yet manage to buy only 530 tonnes of boiled and 1748 metric tonnes of Atap rice from these millers.
