Government has extended a ban on exports of all varieties of rice except the aromatic one for another year, till June 30, 2015.
In 2008, a former caretaker government had first clamped the ban in the wake of sky-rocketing rice prices. It was subsequently extended several times.
Recently, the Ministry of Commerce announced the ban extension to maintain the supply of the grain in the domestic market, regulate prices, and prevent price hike.
The government’s announcement said the ban had been extended in accordance with the Import and Exports (Control) Act 1950.
