Agriculture experts at a farmers’ field day and training course have said the rice-based cropping pattern incorporating mustard and potato cultivation becomes popular to increase crop output bringing more profits for farmers.
They were addressing the separate occasions organised by Padokhkhep Manobik Unnayan Kendra (PMUK) on technologies for mustard cultivation under the rice-based cropping pattern pilot project at Ulipur and Chilmari of Kurigram on Wednesday.
The NGO organised the farmers’ field day in village Moyna Khamar under Chilmari upazila and training course in Mandalpara village under Ulipur upazila on cultivation technology of BARI Sorisha-14 and 15 under the project being funded by Krishi Gobeshona Foundation (KGF).
Cite Coordinator of the Validation and Up-scaling of Improving Rice-based Cropping System Incorporating Mustard and Potato in Northern Districts Project of KGF Feroz Ahmed attended both the occasions as the chief guest.
Principal Scientific Officer of the On-farm Research Division of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) at its Rangpur Regional Station Dr Mazharul Anwar chaired the occasions participated by 150 and 30 male and female farmers respectively.
Chilmari Upazila Agriculture Officer of the Department of Agriculture Extension Mohammed Shamsuddin Mian attended the farmers’ field day in Moyna Khamar village as the special guest.
The agriculture experts said the farmers are being highly benefited through getting an additional crop of either mustard or potato during the gap period between Aman and Boro cultivation from their cultivable land adopting the cropping pattern.
Under the pilot project, BARI variety mustard has been cultivated on 823 acres land in Chilmari and Ulipur upazilas of Kurigram, 64 acres land in Sadar upazila of Rangpur and 134 acres land in Shibganj and Gabtoli upazilas of Bogra districts this season.
The farmers have been provided with BARI-14 and 15 mustard and Boro seed, latest technologies for cultivation, pests’ management, collection and preservation of seed, preparation of model seedbed, using balanced fertilisers including granular urea for up-scaling of the cropping pattern.
