The government is set to launch on today a programme for selling rice at Taka 10 per kilogram to 50 lakh poor families to ensure for them the supply of staple food grain during the lean season, officials said.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the nationwide “Food Friendly Programme for the Ultra Poor” tomorrow at a public rally at Chilmari Pilot High School ground of Kurigram district.
Officials familiar with the process said under the programme, first of its kind in the country, specia cards would be issued for poor people who would get 30 kilograms of rice a month for five months every year.
The five months are: March, April, September, October and November.
The food ministry already prepared a policy and allocated 5.5 lakh tonnes of rice for smooth operation of the programme from September to November this year and March to April next year.
Women-led families, widowed, divorced or abandoned women and the poor households with children will be given priority to get the food support.
A five-member upazila level committee will select the beneficiaries under supervision of a government official when another upazila level committee headed by the local lawmaker will finalise the list.
A dealer for every 500 households will be engaged at the programmer’s operational areas for selling the rice as per the list prepared by the selection committee.
