Ribbon retting to rot jute plants amid water scarcity stressed

Speakers at a farmers’ field day have said that lowest-cost and easiest ribbon retting technology helps in rotting jute plants amid water scarcity and droughts to get upgraded quality of the fibre with increased yield rate.
They asked the farmers for large-scale adoption of the lowest-cost technology that might be crucial in future following adverse impacts of ongoing climate change that continues affecting the agriculture sector creating water scarcity for rotting jute plants like the prevailing drought situation now in Rangpur region.
They were addressing the farmers’ field day arranged Tuesday at Gangachara upazila parishad premises for distribution of ribboners, polythene sheets and wooden hammers among fifty farmers and to exhibit the ribbon retting technology.
Gangachara Upazila Jute Department under the ‘High Yielding Jute and Jute Seed Production and Improved Jute Retting Project’ of the Ministry of Jute and Textiles organised the event.
Gangachara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tauhidul Islam attended the ceremony as the chief guest and distributed 50 ribboners, 50 pieces of polythene sheets and 50 wooden hammers among 50 jute farmers from six unions of the upazila.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Abdullah Al Mamun, Upazila Secondary Education Officer Shahanaz Parveen, Upazila Rural Development Officer Rabeya Sultana, Upazila Fisheries Officer Rezaul Kabir addressed the occasion as the special guests.
Assistant Upazila Jute Development Officer Tahmina Parveen moderated the occasion presided over by Upazila Jute Development Officer AKM Mahbub Alam Biswas.
Agriculture experts demonstrated the ribbon retting technology to the farmers for separating jute fibre from harvested jute plants and rotting those easily despite water scarcity.
They narrated the lowest-cost ribbon retting technology and its tremendous benefits in overcoming drought-like situations and water scarcity for rotting jute plants to get the best quality fibre with maximum price.
Increasing multidimensional use of jute products have enhanced jute demand in the global markets following adverse effects of synthetic fibre on environment ushering a new hope for revival of the past glory of the golden fibre, they said.
The chief guest advised the farmers to adopt the modern technology to increase production of quality jute fibre.
