Officers and assistant officers of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) protested in front of the NBR head office in the city on Monday demanding immediate suspension and exemplary punishment for Lutful Kabir, Joint Commissioner (JC) of Pangaon Customs House.
Several hundred of the revenue officers from different customs houses took part in the protest under the banner of Dhaka- Rajshahi- Rangpur
Customs, Excise and VAT Executive Officers Association for abusing and harassing revenue officers through verbally and physically.
The protesters said, “The Joint Commissioner (current charge) Lutful Kabir has been misbehaving with the officials and employees several times since his joining at the Pangaon Custom House. He harassed the officers and employees physically too.”
“Lutful Kabir brought the concerned revenue and assistant revenue officers at his room and forced to sign a document on November 25. Bhabesh Chandra Biswas, one of the revenue officers, refused to sign the document. At one stage, the commissioner harassed him physically, which is absolutely violation of the Public Service Act, 2018,” they said.
“If the Joint Commissioner is not being suspended by Monday, we will go for harder protest including temporary strike from Tuesday,” said Khandaker Luful Azam, Convener of the Bangladesh Customs, Excise and VAT Executive Officers Association (BACAV).
Latter, the protest was postponed in assurance of the NBR Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem.
“We have postponed our protest for today (Monday) on the assurance of Chairman Sir. We will let you know the next course of action after holding a meeting,” Azam said.
Earlier on Sunday, the protester submitted an allegation paper to the NBR chairman against the joint commissioner and demanded immediate suspension and exemplary punishment for him.
An NBR official wishing his anonymity told The New Nation, “We received an allegation paper from the customs house. After scrutinizing the allegation, NBR chairman will take decision, whether the joint commissioner is guilty or not.”
