The High Court (HC) on Tuesday directed the government to return Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury’s passport for six months.
Ariful submitted his passport to the Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet last year as per a High Court directive.
The HC ordered Ariful Haque Chowdhury to submit his passport at the time
of granting bail to him in former Finance Minister S A M S Kibria murder case.
The HC bench of Justice Muhammad Abdul Hafiz and Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty asked the DC of Sylhet to return Ariful’s passport after hearing a petition filed by the Mayor to get back his passport.
Ariful’s lawyer Advocate Fazlur Rahman told the reporters that Ariful and his wife will attend the convocation of a college in London where his daughter Saiza Tabassub Chowdhury completed her graduation.
The convocation will be held on September 10, he said adding that Ariful and his wife are scheduled to start for London on September 8.
On August 14 this year, a Sylhet court refused to pass any order on return of the passport to the Sylhet city Mayor.
Mayor Ariful recently filed a revision petition with the HC challenging the Sylhet court order.
In the petition, he prayed to the HC to order the government to return his passport so that he can go to London for attending his daughter’s convocation ceremony.
