Retired Colonel gets 9-year jail in income tax evasion case

A retired army officer was given nine-year jail sentence in an income tax evasion case on Sunday.
Judge Mohammad Nazrul Islam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-10, pronounced the judgement against the accused Shahid Uddin Khan. The convict has been absconding from the beginning of trial of the case. An arrest of warrant was issued against him. The court sources said the convict Shahid Uddin Chowdhury was given one year jail sentence under Section 164, three years under Section 165 and five years under Section 166 of the Bangladesh Penal Code. So, Shahid Uddin Khan will have to stay in jail for nine years, the judge said.
The case statement reads that assistant commissioner of taxes Sheikh Ali Hasan filed a case against Col (Retd) Shahid Uddin Khan on September 25, 2019 on charge of income tax evasion. Later, charge was framed against him on September 28 this year. During the trial of the case, 11 witnesses submitted their depositions to the court.
