UNB, Dhaka :BNP on Thursday warned that the consequences will be dire if the government arrests its chairperson Khaleda Zia as per its ‘plot’ to weaken BNP.”I’ve seen in the newspapers that a process is on to send our leader Khaleda Zia to jail. Though it’s not an easy task to detain her, nothing is impossible for the Awami League-led government as it lacks the sense of humanity,” said BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas. He further said, “I want to equivocally state that the consequences will not be good if our leader is arrested as the country’s people won’t accept it in any way.” Abbas came up with the remarks while speaking at a joint meeting of Dhaka city unit BNP at Bhasani auditorium in the city’s Nayapaltan area. The meeting was arranged to work out plans to make the party’s programmes chalked out to mark BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s 35th death anniversary a success. On Wednesday, a Dhaka court issued the warrants for the arrest of 38 BNP leaders, including its chief Khaleda Zia, in a case filed with Jatrabari Police Station in connection with an arson attack during the party’s last year’s movement. Earlier on May 19, another Dhaka court warned that it will issue a warrant for the arrest Khaleda if she fails to appear before it on June 2 for self-defence in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case. Abbas, also the convener of Dhaka city unit BNP, alleged that a conspiracy is also being hatched against their party as done before and during the 1/11 political changeover to weaken it. He urged BNP leaders and activists to remain aware to foil any evil attempt by any quarter against their party. The BNP leader also alleged that a section of media is carrying false news involving BNP and its leaders as part of a plot by a vested quarter. Another BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy urged party men to get ready for foiling the government’s conspiracy against Khaleda. “The government won’t be able to implement its plan if we can work out an effective strategy.” He criticised a group party leaders who are now making hectic efforts get party posts instead of mobilising people to thwart the government’ s plot against BNP and its chief. BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rzvi, joint secretary general Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Dhaka city unit BNP leaders Abdus Salam, Abul Khaiyer Bhuiyan and Kazi Abul Bashar were, among others, present.
