BSS, Rajshahi :
Responsible role and leadership of all the government and non-government entities concerned can be the crucial means of freeing the society from all sorts of abusing of drugs besides its illicit trafficking and trading.
Utmost emphasis should be given on halting the intrusion of drugs through borderlines as all kinds of drugs are entered into the country through borders because Bangladesh isn’t the producing place of any of those.
The views were expressed unanimously by some experts and stakeholders at a district level view-sharing and consultation meeting titled “Integrated Programme to prevent HIV/AIDS among intravenous drug users and their sex partners” in Rajshahi city on Wednesday.
The Department of Drugs Control (DNC) hosted the meeting in its divisional office conference hall in association with Asakta Purnorbashan Sangstha (APS), Save the Children and the Global Fund.
Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police Mozahedul Islam addressed the meeting as the chief guest, while Civil Surgeon Dr Enamul Haque and DNC Deputy Director Ali Aslam spoke as special guests with DNC Additional Director Zafrullah Kajal in the chair. APS Executive Director Abul Bashar welcomed the participants while its officer Muhammad Obaidullah gave an overview of the issue in his multimedia presentation.
The keynote presenter told the meeting that people, especially the young generation and students of different educational institutions have become addicted to different kinds of injecting drugs and heroin, phensedyl and yaba. These contraband items are sold at different spots and shops and a large number of drug addicts gather at those places regularly to buy the items and involve them in drug abuse, he added.
In his remarks, Mozahedul Islam stressed the need for modern and adequate safe treatment facilities towards the drug addicts for their rehabilitation as drug and alcohol addiction is a very serious disease.
He pointed out that addiction can tear families and destroy lives. So, all the government and non-government organizations concerned should come forward and work together with the anti-drugs campaign to make it a total success.
Dr Enamul Haque mentioned that the people who inject drugs and suffer from addiction need a great deal of professional help to overcome this disease. Drug addiction and HIV/AIDS are interlinked. So, there is no alternative to concerted efforts.
Instead of sporadic efforts, a holistic approach has become an urgent need for more public awareness about the prevailing risks of HIV/AIDS for its successful prevention.
Collective efforts of all stakeholders and other gatekeepers are very important to prevent any more infection of the deadly virus, Dr Haque added.
