Friendship, a local NGO, on Monday set up a Friendship Resource Centre in a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya to promote the culture and language of the Rohingya population.
Ambassador of Thailand to Bangladesh Makawadee Sumitmor inaugurated the construction of the resource centre.
Additional Commissioner for Refugee, Relief and Repatriation Md Shamsud Douza and UNICEF Bangladesh representative Sheldon Yett were also present on the occasion as the special guests.
Brig Gen (retd) Ilyas Iftekhar Rasul, Head of Education Department, said that at present, 28,145 Rohingya children are receiving their
Burmese language lessons and daily necessities from 396 Friendship Learning Centres and 717 trainers are teaching the Rohingya children.
Instead of Bangla language and culture, Rohingyas are being taught their own culture and Burmese language at the Friendship Learning Centres, he added.
This resource centre is being constructed to enhance the skills and qualifications of the trainers working in the learning centre, he added.
With the launching of the Friendship Resource Centre, it will be easier to provide various workshops and training in a suitable environment, he said.
After the displacement of the Rohingya community from Myanmar, the main challenge was the lack of access to education and social skills.
The organisers said this resources centre will be a big support for the Rohingyas until they are returned to their homeland.
