The Director General of European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) Prof Dr Rolf-Diter Heuer stressed the need to conduct fundamental research for development of the mankind. He was delivering a lecture on “The Role of CERN in International Scientific Collaboration” at the NNAC Senate Bhaban of the University of Dhaka on Tuesday.
Presided over by DU VC Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique the function was attended by Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid MP as chief guest. UGC Chairman Prof AK Azad Chowdhury attended the function as special guest while DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof Dr Nasreen Ahmad delivered vote of thanks on the occasion.
Eminent German Physicist Prof. Heuer mentioned that we should fulfill the needs of present world through accomplishing fundamental and basic scientific research. He added that since inception in 1954 CERN has been working on fundamental research to bring positive changes to mankind. He termed science as universal language and urged skilled and meritorious youths of science and technology to come forward for innovations for the global interests.
He also said that the cooperation between this university and CERN will be further enhanced. He expressed his gratitude to Dhaka University authorities for conferring honorary “Doctor of Science” degree on him.
Education Minister Mr. Nurul Islam Nahid MP thanked Prof Heuer for participating the 48th convocation of the University of Dhaka. He hoped that through this, the existing bi-lateral relations between CERN and Dhaka University will be strengthened and the students and researchers would get chances to take part in basic research of science and technology at CERN.
Chairman of Bangladesh University Grants Commission and special guest Prof Dr A K Azad Chowdhury underscored the need to implement sustainable research and development programs to achieve goals for sustainable development.
He urged for increasing budget allocation in public sector for conducting fundamental research in science and technology.
Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique stated that no country could flourish in isolation. We need mutual cooperation and working relationship for achieving development goals. In this era of science and technology basic and fundamental research are important for development.
The VC hoped that by connecting with CERN network DU students and researchers would be able to enhance their knowledge and skills in the global context. Among others DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Shahid Akhtar Hossain, Treasurer Prof Dr Md. Kamal Uddin and Prof. Emmanuel Tsesmelis of Director General’s Office of CERN were also present on the occasion. DU Registrar Syed Rezaur Rahman conducted the function.
