Rescuers have pulled the body of a man from the debris of a building that partially collapsed in Dhaka’s Moghbazar following an explosion. The death toll rose to eight.
Victim Harun-or-Rashid Howlader, 65, was the caretaker of the three-storey building in the Wireless Gate area.
Debashish Bardhan, a deputy director of the Fire Service and Civil Defence, said they found Howlader under the debris near the staircases about 3:30 pm on Tuesday.
Earlier, his daughter Hena Begum reported her father as missing since the incident on Sunday evening.
The authorities on Monday handed over the bodies of the first seven victims of the horrific explosion to their families.
The victims are college student Mostafizur Rahman, 26, private car driver Md Swapan, 39, bus driver Abul Kashem Molla, 45, private firm employee Ruhul Amin, 30, Shawarma House chef Osman Goni Tushar, 35, housewife Jannat, 23 and her nine-month-old daughter Subhana.
Shawarma House and Bengal Meat had their outlets on the ground floor of the building. The first floor was a showroom of Singer.
Hundreds, including many pedestrians and commuters, were injured in the blast, which is believed to have been caused by a gas leak somewhere in the building. Police have ruled out any foul play behind the incident.
Mangled pillars, glass shards and broken concrete were all over the street. Two heavily damaged buses were left in a heap outside the building.
