Mongla factory collapse: Rescue operation called off, death toll now 7

The authorities of the collapsed four-storied cement factory at Mongla upazila in Bagerhat district called off the rescue operation on Thursday.
At least seven bodies have so far been recovered from the debris of the building owned by the Sena Kalyan Sangstha.
Three of the victims have been identified as Maharuf Hawlader, Amir Akunji and Al Amin.
Brigadier General Mohammad Selim, Acting Chairman of the Sena Kalyan Sangstha on Friday afternoon declared the end of the salvage operation.
He said, “We do not think there is any existence of life inside the rubbles. So we are closing the rescue
 operation.” “At least fifty six people, who received injuries in the accident, were undergoing treatment in the Khulna Medical College and Hospital, the Mongla Port Hospital and the the Rampal Upazila Health Complex,” an army official said.
Meanwhile, the authorities of the Elephant Brand Cement Factory has declared that every deceased family will be given Tk one lakh each.
Md Shah Alam Sardar, Deputy Commissioner (current charge), said that the local administration would give Tk 20,000 each to the deceased’s families, while Tk 10,000 each as compensation to injured families,” the DC said.
Deputy Director of the factory Captain Syed Helal Hossain said, “The authorities will also bear the treatment cost of the workers who have been injured in the collapse.”
The government and the Sena Kalyan Sangstha have started separate investigations into the accident taking place at the factory of Elephant Brand Cement in Mongla, police sources said.
Meanwhile, a nine-member probe committee was formed on Friday to investigate the incident. Khulna Division’s Additional Commissioner Faruk Hossain would be the committee’s chief, said Khulna Divisional Commissioner Abdus Samad.
Abdus Samad said that the committee had been asked to submit the report within seven working days.
