A large number of representatives from different parts of the globe are expected to attend the 20th triennial council of ruling Awami League scheduled to be held on October 22 and 23 in Dhaka.
AL has already sent invitations to the political parties and organizations of several countries, including USA, Russia, UK, Japan and China. Senior leaders of different renowned political parties, including Communist Party of China [CPC], Labour Party and Conservative Party of UK are likely to attend the programme, sources said.
When contacted, former minister and AL International Affairs Secretary Colonel [retd] Faruk Khan told The New Nation on Sunday: “We’re expecting delegations from around 25 countries around the globe. Particularly, the representatives of political parties in the South Asian region countries are likely to join the venue.”
Colonel [retd] Faruk Khan, who is also head of council’s reception sub-committee along with former ambassador Muhammad Zahir will receive the distinguished foreign guests.
Expressing discomfort Colonel [retd] Faruk Khan further said: “We actually do not want to elaborate the names of the countries from where political representatives are coming….. You know there are many enemies of AL. They can publicize negatively about the council among the foreigners.”
Party sources said most of the parties in the South Asian nations have got invitations to send their observers. Especially, India’s ruling party BJP [Bharatiya Janata Party], Trinamool Congress of West Bengal and Tripura’s ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist [CPI-M] are likely to send their representatives.
Meanwhile, responding to the AL’s invitation, Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee is sending secretary general of Trinamool Congress Partha Chatterjee as her ‘special envoy’ to attend the event.
Although Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is also President of AL, wanted Mamata Banerjee to come to Dhaka on the eve of the council, the Chief Minister could not avail the opportunity due to prescheduled programme, Indian media reported on Sunday.
“I’m going there [Bangladesh] as the special representative of Chief Minister. I will convey her message there…. peaceful coexistence would ensure development. At the same time, I’ll tell the stories to AL leaders and workers about the struggles of Mamata Banerjee,” Partha Chatterjee.
In this situation, the AL council preparation committee, headed by PM Sheikh Hasina, will sit in a meeting to know the overall progress of council at Gano Bhaban on Tuesday [tomorrow] evening.
Meanwhile, the capital city Dhaka is going to take a decorative look centering the AL council where roads and surrounding areas of party president’s Dhanmondi office have already been illuminated apparently to give a festive mood.
Earlier on Saturday, the AL national committee passed a budget of Taka 2 crore 65 lakh for the expenditure of its 20th council.
” At the same time, the AL passed another budget of Taka 12 crore 56 lakh for running the party next one year and Taka 5 crore to construct the new building for AL headquarters,” AL Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap said.
