Sylhet Correspondent :
Four local organisations have demanded immediate renovation of Sylhet-Companiganj-Bholaganj Road, which plays an important role in transporting stones and sand from the country’s biggest stone quarry at Bholaganj.
Companiganj Stone Crushing Mill Malik Samity, Companiganj Pathor Byabosayee Samobaya Samity, Companiganj Truck Malik Samity and Sylhet Zila Truck Sramik Union raised the demand at a press conference held at Sylhet Press Club on Saturday.
People of Companiganj upazila and leaders and workers of the four organisations yesterday formed human chains at 17 points of the 37-kilometre road to press the demand.
Though the road is in a sorry state, over 2000 trucks ply the road every day to transport stones to different areas of the country, the leaders of the four organisations said, adding that the authorities concerned should take immediate steps to repair the road. ‘We have already submitted memos to the roads and bridges minister, finance minister, state minister for finance and planning and local lawmaker Imran Ahmed to repair this important road, but no positive step has been taken yet,’ the leaders of the organisations said.
Contacted, Iftekhar Kabir, superintending Engineer of R&H in Sylhet, said a Tk 447 crore project has remained pending with the planning ministry for months for approval.
‘We cannot start renovation work due to lack of fund,’ he added.
