UNB, Dhaka :
The National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways (NCPSRR) demanded to reopen the Mongla-Ghoshiakhali channel immediately in a bid to save the Sundarbans.
The NCPSRR came up with the demand at a discussion at Mukti Bhaban in the city’s Paltan area.
Chaired by the committee’s president Prof Dr Abdur Rahim, the discussion was also addressed by general secretary Ashish Kumar Dey and Communist Party of Bangladesh leader Ruhin Hossain Prince. Prof Abdur Rahim said the national committee recently unveiled public survey report on the Mongla-Ghoshiakhali channel that showed about 77 percent of local people demands immediate reopening of the channel.
Speakers at the discussion also demanded immediate cancellation of the coal-fired Rampal power plant for protecting the Sundarbans.
