Renovation of 9 archaeological sites in Khulna Div underway

Renovation and conservation of nine archeological sites in Khulna division under a special project of the government have got underway with a target to complete the works by next year.
Once the project is completed, the archeological sites enriched with structures of great antiquity will open up an unbounded scope for the local people to acquire knowledge about history and tradition of the region.
The Department of Archeology is implementing the project at a cost of Tk1.5 crore.
The nine archeological sites in the division had long been lying uncared for and the government has started the work feeling necessity of their immediate renovation and maintenance.
The archeological sites under renovation are Rabindra Complex at Daxindihi in Phultala upazila, PC Roy’ house in Paikgachha upazila, Amjhupi Nilkuthi in Meherpur district, Eleven Shiva Temple and Chanchra Temple in Abhaynagar upazila, Mirzanagar Hammamkhana, Bharat Bhaina Dhibi and Michael Madhusudan Dutt’s house in Keshabpur uapzila of Jessore district and Nihar Ranjan Gupta’s house in Narail district.
Already reconstruction works of some of them have been completed while the rest will take this year and the next year.
The expenditure for reconstruction and maintain of Rabindra Complex in Phultala has been fixed at Tk30 lakh.
A library will be set up there, books for which have already been purchased.
A boundary wall with RCC grill will be erected by this year while furniture for the complex and tolls for preservation of the artifacts will be arranged next year.
Besides, reconstruction work of Bharat Bhaina Dhibi in Keshabpur upazila involving Tk37 lakh is also underway.
The renovation work includes construction of a boundary wall of the Dhibi and a visitors’ shed.
However, construction work of an RCC boundary wall of Amjhupi Nilkuthi in Meherpur district has been completed and construction of a walkway will be completed next year.
Sources said there are 91 archeological sites in Khulna and Barisal divisions and the historical places are losing their importance due to lack of reconstruction and maintenance.
Besides, some historical structures have turned into safe dens of anti-social elements, including drug addicts.
Amiruzzaman, director of the Department of Archeology, Khulna division, said after completion of the work, the historical sites will be safe from damage and destruction.
Besides, a brochure is being prepared by which people will get to know about the historical values of these places, he added.
