Some grassroots farmers in a discussion on Thursday mentioned substantial and sustainable use of solar power like renewable energy can be the effective means of protecting life and environment.
They viewed time has come to transform the existing power supply depended irrigation system into solar power based to lessen the gradually mounting pressure on electricity in the vast Barind tract.
Bangladesh Resource Center for Indigenous Knowledge (BARCIK), a collective initiative for participatory research, policy advocacy and campaign, organized the discussion at its Tanore Resource Centre in the district yesterday.
More than 50 persons comprising farmers, public representatives and officials of government and non-government departments attended the meeting.
“Renewable Fuel Services: Problems and Solutions” was title of the discussion.
Bank representative Asim Kumar Sarker, BARCIK Programme Officer Jahid Ali, national agriculture award winning farmer Yousuf Ali Mollah, farmers Abdul Hamid and Jitendra Nath Sutradhar and Joyeeta Award winning farmer Kabul Jan addressed the meeting. BARCIK Barind Region Coordinator Shahidul Islam moderated the discussion.
During his keynote presentation, Engineer Motasim Billah highlighted the importance of solar power and biogas plant. Elaborating the construction and service technic, he said the present government is extending loan to set up biogas plant.
Taking part in the discussion, the farmers opined protection of environment and natural resources together with promotion and using of renewable energies is very important for protecting both climate and life.
