City Desk :
There is an enormous scope of reducing the gradually mounting pressure on fossil fuel through substantial and sustainable promotion of renewable energies in both rural and urban areas, said speakers at a pre-cycling campaign discussion. They mentioned emphasis should be given to motivating the public in general for using renewable energies as a whole besides protecting its resources from further destruction.
All the government and non-government organisations concerned should come forward and patronise the sector for its successful promotion for the sake of its existing potentialities along with building a green environment. The observation came yesterday at the discussion titled “Energy and Poverty and Poor Peoples Participation in Renewable Energies” on Nagar Bhaban premises in Rajshahi. Bangladesh Resource Center for Indigenous Knowledge (BARCIK), a collective initiative for participatory research, policy advocacy and campaign, organized the discussion and cycling campaign. City Youth Forum and Rotaract Club of North Bengal (RNB) jointly supported the event. Mayor-in-charge of Rajshahi City Corporation Nizam-ul-Azim, River and Environment Researcher Mahbub Siddiqui and programme convener of RNB Rezwan Altab spoke on the occasion.
During his concept paper presentation, Shahidul Islam, Researcher and Regional Coordinator of BARCIK, mentioned instead of depending on only the fossil fuel emphasis should be given to enriching the renewable energy sources to face the energy challenges.
Availability of energy from different sources is vital for the present life in meeting the challenge of the ever-increasing demand for energy.
He emphasised the need for wide-ranging use of energy efficient products to reduce the existing pressure on power demands.
He laid stress on using energy efficient electrical appliances to reduce electricity cost coupled with energy conservation which is essential for addressing the energy crises.
All concerned should work together for building social awareness about a judicious use of fossil fuel and ending its misuse. Besides, the issue of converting the irrigation system into solar power-based one should be taken into consideration immediately.
In his remarks, Mayor Azim highlighted the enormous aspects of the sector in both rural and urban areas of the region including the vast Barind tract and said there should have adequate measures of making those accesses for the poor and marginalised population.
The discussion was followed by a cycling rally of youths that passed through various city streets in order to create mass-awareness on the issue.
