Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury called for removing disparity along with economic development for the welfare of all in country.
She made the call while speaking as chief guest at a discussion meeting on ‘Democracy, Economy and Trade’ organized by American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) at a city hotel.
The speaker said even rapid economic growth in a country cannot bring welfare for all in society because of disparity.
Though some people get extra privileges in society, others remain deprived, she said and called upon the country’s policymakers to be more careful regarding this while formulating policies.
Dr Shirin Sharmin said half of the population in the country are women, who fall victims to discriminations in education, health, employment and right to wealth.
She said the women are now progressing in education and all other sectors because various government steps taken for the development.
The speaker said the main objective of democracy is bringing significant changes to the living standard of the people and the present government is working to this end.
Bangladesh is now an emerging economic power,she said and hoped that the country would be able to attain sustainable development because of time-befitting steps taken by the government.
An investment-friendly environment is now prevailing in Bangladesh, she said and urged AMCHAM representatives to work to bring US investment in information technology (IT) sector in Bangladesh and realize GSP facilities in US for Bangladeshi garment.
AMCHAM President Nurul Islam and US Embassy Charge d’ Affairs David Mile also spoke on the occasion.
