Students give 24-hour ultimatum

The students of Barishal University on Monday gave 24-hour ultimatum demanding written assurance of the removal of its Vice-Chancellor.
The came up with the announcement while observing their agitation for the 13th day.
Abdur Rahman Mizan, one of the organiser of the movement, told The New Nation that they gave 24-hour to meet their demand. “The VC hurled abusive words at the students. We will never accept him on the university campus. That is why we want written assurance of his remoival,” he said.
“We will launch tough movement is our demand is not meet by 24-hour,” he said.
Earlier in the morning, the protesting students blocked Barishal-Kuakata highway to press home their demand halting vehicular movement for several hours.
They boycotted classes and examinations yesterday.
Dr. Hasinur Rahman, Registrar of the university, said, a six-hour long negotiation meeting was ended on Saturday afternoon and the meeting assured the students to meet their all demands including removal of its Vice-Chancellor.
The state Minister for Water Resources, BCC Mayor, local elites, officials of administration, law enforcing agencies with the leaders of agitated students were present at the meeting.
As per the meeting’s decision the university’s halls and canteen has been opened from Saturday night.
All academic and administrative activities, operation of BU transport pool also declared to be resumed from Sunday morning, the meeting sources said.
It also decided in the meeting that the BU VC will be removed and go on leave as his tenure remained only for 2 months only.
Other demands related with different issues of academic, accommodation and transportation problems would also be resolved gradually.
However Dr. SM Imamul Haque, BU VC, said he is yet to be formally informed about the decision of the meeting.
“None talked with me about going to leave. After receiving those decisions officially,” he said.
The BU students started their agitation from March 27 after Professor. Dr. SM Imamul Haque, vice chancellor of
BU, in a programme of Debating Society at the university on March 26, commented that the students, who foiled a programme of tea-party of the Independence Day observation, were “Razakarer Bachcha”.
On March 29, the VC expressed regret about his comment, which was rejected by the students and they continued their protest programmes to press home removal of the VC from his post.
