Remittance may rise 17pc despite fall in labour migration this year

Remittance may reach US US$ 18.19 billion this year with an increase of 17.05 per cent if its current flow continues, according to a report.
The Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU) revealed the report at a press briefing based on Bangladesh Bank data at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital.
Professor of Dhaka University Tasneem Siddiqui, founder Chair of the RMMRU, presented the report at the briefing.
RMMRU Chair Dr Shahdeen Malik was present at the briefing, among others.
Earlier, Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment State Minister Imran Ahmed, said, “The number of workers which we are sending abroad have decreased a little, as we are focusing on to send skilled workers. That is why remittance is increasing despite of number of workers abroad are decreasing.
The BMMRU report showed that Bangladeshi expatriates sent remittance of US$16.67 billion till November this year, about 19.87 per cent of them came from Saudi Arabia and 14.99 per cent from the UAE.
The RMMRU’s report on ‘Labour Migration Trend Report-2019 also said that a total of 604,060 Bangladeshi workers went abroad, including the middle-east and southeast Asian countries.
According to the Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET), the number of Bangladeshi expatriates declined this year, said RMMRU Chairman Tasneem.
She said that the Malaysian labour market is closed for more than a year for Bangladeshi workers. That is why the number of country’s expatriates decreased.
