In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of André Malraux’s passing, under the patronage of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Government of Bangladesh and the Embassy of France in Dhaka, Alliance Française (AFD) and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) are going to arrange a series of events ‘Remembering André Malraux.’ The main event will be on November 23 at 10:30am at National Art Gallery Auditorium of BSA.
Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor MP, Sophie Aubert, Ambassador of France to Bangladesh, Mario Palma, Ambassador of Italy to Bangladesh and Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, Vice Chancellor of University of Dhaka will glance the occasion.
To announce the schedule, a press session was held at BSA Seminar Hall on Monday where Bruno Plasse, Director of AFD and Liaquat Ali Lucky, Director General of BSA shared their views about the event.
These events are focusing on André Malraux’s support to the liberation war in September 1971, and the homage he paid during his visit to Bangladesh in 1973 to the sacrifice of martyrs, intellectuals, students and people of Bangladesh. At the age of 70 in September 1971, he was one mighty voice to air on the radio a vehement call for the constitution of a new International Brigade for Bangladesh, and his announcement to come forward for military service received hundreds of letters from volunteers. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman invited Malraux in recognition of his commitment to Bangladesh’s cause and in 1973 Malraux visited the independent Bangladesh. The event will start through the speech of Sophie Aubert.
Dr Arefin Siddique will share his view on Malraux’s visit to University of Dhaka.
Assaduzaman Noor will deliver his welcome address. After these addresses there will be a documentary screening on Malraux’s visit to Bangladesh in 1973 through the eyes of Prof Dr Mahmud Shah Qureshi. Dr Gurupada Chakraborty will say few words on his book Asha (Bangla translation of André Malraux’s L’Espoir). There will be a drama performance titled Asha, directed by Ashim Das, focusing on some popular speeches given by André Malraux. Two exhibitions also will be on display at the lobby of BSA on November 23 from 10:30am to 2:00pm.
