The government is yet to take any planned step for distributing relief to the flood-affected people in the country’s northern regions while the effort of local administrations in this regard is also very poor. There is widespread allegation that the authorities still could not address the issues of flood-hit people providing food items, clothes, medicines and other items that are need of the moment.
Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya Bir Bikram, Minister for Disaster Management and Relief, however, has refuted the allegations.
“We have already sent enough relief goods to the distressed areas. Whenever the district administrations inform us about the requirements, we are sending relief items to the said areas. I see no problem there,” he told The New Nation on Saturday night.
When asked about the scarcity of food and medicines in some specific northern districts, the Minister said, “It may happen, but very rare. It’s not a common scenario. We have already received requisition list from all district administrations of the flood-affected zone. The situation will be under control soon. I hope there will be no problem.”
“If you want to know the details than contact with DG of Relief. He is coordinating the relief works,” he said when asked about the requirements of northern districts.
Sources said several lakhs of victims have taken shelter on the nearby flood protection embankments and were passing their agonising days. The water-borne diseases have also started to break out due to crisis of pure drinking water.
There is an urgent need of food items, like flour, cooking oil, rice, sugar, spices, supply of clean drinking water, non food items clothes, shelter and for medical help, the sources said.
