Tampaco death toll now 35: Relatives of missing workers go for DNA test

Another worker who suffered severe burn injuries at Tampaco Foils factory fire died at a private clinic in the capital on Tuesday night, sending the death toll in the incident to 35.
Hossain Ahmed, alias Rasel (26), who was unconscious since the day of the fire succumbed at Dhaka’s Japan Bangladesh Friendship Hospital yesterday afternoon, Sub-Inspector (SI) Suman Bhakta of Tongi Police Station told The New Nation on Wednesday evening.
He was son of Hasan Ali of Sylhet’s Golapganj and a worker at Tampaco. Rasel was admitted to the hospital on the day of the fire. He had suffered 70 per cent burns.
 “His body was handed over to father Hasan Ali,” said SI Bhakta.
Gazipur Relief Officer Mahbubur Rahman said Tk 20,000 was given to Hasan Ali for the burial of his son Hussain.
Officials said a total of 39 workers who received burn injuries from the factory fire are under-going treatment at hospitals in the capital and eleven more workers are still missing.
Besides, relatives of missing workers were flocked Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in Dhaka to trace their loved ones from the unidentified bodies now kept at the mortuary of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
They went there for the DNA testing which was scheduled yesterday (Wednesday).
 “I couldn’t trace my husband in 12 days. Now I am here for DNA test to identify my husband,” said Parvin Akhter, wife of missing worker Azim Uddin.
 “The bodies are burned beyond recognition. Now, DNA testing is our last hope,” she added.
Police said DNA testing will be carried out on the remnants of nine bodies to found out their identities.
Tampaco Foils Ltd in Tongi BSCIC Industrial Area in Gazipur caught fire after an explosion from gas broiler on September 10, leading to collapse of the factory building.
Investigators are yet to find out the cause of the disaster.
Tampaco Foils Limited owner has been accused in two cases, including one for murder.
Army and fire service men were carrying out rescue operation at the fire-ravaged factory for the 12 consecutive days on Wednesday.
