The sensational five murders of Baburail reportedly took place over the refusal of an illicit proposal by one of the victims.
Mahfuz, a nephew of the complainant, purportedly admitted during interrogation in remand that he planned to teach his slain aunt Lamia a lesson after she refused his proposal for an illicit relation which led to the five murders.
Wishing anonymity, a source at the district Detective Branch of police said Mahfuz along with his associates carried out the murders.
He, however, is yet to disclose details of his cohorts and make a confessional statement before a court, said the source.
The five members of the family were killed by unidentified miscreants at Baburail in the city on Saturday night.
The deceased are Taslima Begum, 35, wife of Shafiqul Islam, a private car driver in capital Dhaka, their children Sumaiya, 5, and Shantu, 10, Taslima’s brother Morshedul, 22, and Lamia, 25, who was married to Shafiqul’s brother Sharif.
Shafiqul Islam filed a case against unidentified miscreants with Narayanganj Sadar Police Station on Sunday morning.
Police arrested Mahfuz and showed him arrested in the case on the same day.
On the next day, a Narayanganj court placed Mahfuz on a seven-day remand in the case.
