Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said necessary reforms have been carried out in the labour sector to ensure welfare of the workers alongside boosting production.
“Our government has taken necessary steps and carried out reforms in the labour sector for ensuring welfare of the workers side by side with raising production in mills and factories,” she said.
The prime minister made the remarks when a
delegation of Labour Friends of Bangladesh (LFoB) from the United Kingdom paid a courtesy call on her at her Ganabhaban residence here yesterday evening.
Dame Rosie Winterton, MP, former minister and chief whip of Labour Party shadow cabinet, led the 10-member team comprising Labour Party lawmakers and leaders.
After the meeting, PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters.
While elaborating her government’s steps for the welfare of the workers, the prime minister said labour law has been amended and the working condition in the mills and factories has been improved significantly.
She said her government has constructed dormitories for the workers, particularly garment workers and has been providing medicare facilities to the workers.
“We have also appointed labour inspectors in mills and factories to improve the working condition there,” she said. The prime minister and the delegation members discussed the issue of Britain’s exit from the European Union. In this connection, Sheikh Hasina wanted to know from the delegation members that whether there would be any impact on economic relations between Bangladesh and the UK during the post-Brexit period.
The UK delegation members pointed out the excellent relations between the Labour Party and Bangladesh Awami League and hoped that the ties would be strengthened further in the days to come.
The UK delegation included Jonathon Ashworth, shadow health secretary and Dr Rupa Haque, shadow minister of home affairs. Senior Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office Suraiya Begum was present on the occasion.
