Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Imran Ahmed wrote a letter to the Managing Director of Biman Bangladesh Airlines to reduce airfare for the migrants.
The minister asked the Biman authority to see the matter from humanitarian views.
“The migrants workers are contributing enough in our economic development. But the country are not doing enough for their welfare,” the minister said it in the letter sent to Mokabbir Hossain, the MD of Biman Bangladesh Airlines on December 31.
He said in the letter that if the Biman authority decreased the airfare then it will be inspirational for the migration workers. Besides, it will reduce overall expenditures for them.
The expatriates’ welfare minister said that as per his ministry’s efforts, about seven lakh persons are going to abroad with different countries every year.
On the other hand, about U$16.41 billion remittance also sent by those expatriates in last year, which is increasing day by day.
He expressed hope that if the pace is continuing, the remittance will reached U$25 billion by 2021.
The minister said in the letter that the Prime Minister has given directives to reduce migration costs to the remittance heroes.
Most of the migrant workers are from poor families.
In these views, the prime minister is seeking to reduce their overall costing.
Recently, Biman along with some other airlines have increased their airfare, which created burdens for the migration workers.
In these circumstances, the minister asked the state owned airlines to help to reduce migration costs by decreasing airfare.
The minister also mentioned that a large portion of the passengers of the Biman is from the migration workers.
