A Dhaka court yesterday (Sunday) deferred the recording of deposition against BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and others in Zia Charitable Trust and Zia Orphanage Trust graft cases to November 24.
Judge Basudev Roy of Dhaka’s Special Judge Court-3 fixed the date following the pleas of the defense seeking more time on Sunday morning.
Earlier, BNP Chief Khaleda Zia reached at the makeshift court set up in the capital’s Alia Madrasa premises of Bakshi Bazar area for recording the deposition of witnesses in two cases.
Khaleda Zia came to the court premises accompanied by some senior leaders of the party at about 11 am on Sunday. She left her Gulshan residence at around 10 am to appear to the court.
Earlier, on October 26, the same court adjourned the hearing of the two cases until November 9.
The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) had filed the cases in 2008 and 2011. In 2008, the ACC sued six, including Khaleda Zia and her elder son Tarique Rahman for allegedly embezzling Tk 21 million
from the Zia Orphanage Trust fund that had reportedly come from a foreign bank. Charges were framed against the accused two years later.
In 2011, the ACC filed the second case accusing the BNP Chief and three others of embezzling Tk 31.5 million from the Zia Charitable Trust. The national anti-graft organisation, ACC, pressed charges against the accused in 2012.
The court on September 22, this year opened the trial of two cases against Begum Khaleda Zia and others on the charges of accumulating fund illegally for two charitable organizations and later embezzling the amount.
