The record-breaking surge of Covid-19 cases is showing no signs of letting up in Bangladesh, with the highest ever 101 deaths recorded in the 24 hours till Friday morning.
This was the fifth time in the last seven days that the country broke its record for most Covid-19 deaths in a single day.
The total fatalities in the country now stands at 10,182, according to health directorate data collected between 8am Thursday and 8am Friday.
The country also logged 4,417 new Covid-19 cases during the same period, taking the total number infections to 711,779 said the daily Covid-19 update from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) released Friday afternoon.
Of the 101 deceased – 67 men and 34 women – 59 were from Dhaka division; 20 from Chittagong; six from Rangpur, five from Khulna, four from Barisal, three each from Rajshahi and Mymensingh and one from Sylhet.
Of the victims, 94 died at different hospitals and seven at home.
So far, 7,566 men (74.31%) and 2,616 women (25.69%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 5,913 people have died in Dhaka division, 1,828 in Chittagong, 544 in Rajshahi, 633 in Khulna, 305 in Barisal, 347 in Sylhet, 397 in Rangpur, and 215 in Mymensingh.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.43%.
The health authorities said 5,694 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, 602,908 patients – 84.70% – have made full recoveries across the country.
As many as 18,906 samples, including pending ones, were tested at 257 authorized labs across the country.
The latest figures show an infection rate of 23.36%. The overall infection rate in the country stands at 13.86%.
Currently, 17,501 people are in isolation and 50,499 are quarantined.
Till Friday afternoon, a total of 5.6 million people had received the first dose and 930,151 people the second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.
On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus named Sars-CoV-2.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China’s Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast spreading coronavirus had claimed 3,002,313 lives and infected 139,809,244 people across the world till Friday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 118,836,233 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 219 countries and territories across the planet.
