Revival of an abandoned lawn-tennis court at botanical garden of historical Govt. BM College has been protested by the students and citizens of Barishal on Tuesday.
After visiting the Brojo Mohun (BM) College campus on Tuesday it was known that the college started academic activities in 1889 and transferred to this campus in 1917 (present old and science campus).
Then in early Pakistan period botanical garden, green house shed, coal gas plant were established for helping students to acquire knowledge about nature and natural resources.
Naturalist late Dwijen Sharma when worked in this institution as a teacher in 1950 rearranged and developed this botanical garden of the College by planting the Nagalingom and other rare varieties of trees and plants.
Syed Alamgir Firoz, one of the former students of the college, told that there were many rare species of trees including Nagalingom (local name), Palm and variety of cactus plants at the old and green campus of the college.
This botanical garden and green house shed were existed for helping the students of Soil Science and Botany Departments of the College since long days, said Sultana Lily, poet and one of the ex -students of the college.
However recently college authority started reconstruction of the abandoned Lawn Tennis Court for the college teachers by cutting a Mahogany tree and removing structure of the green house.
Shafiqur Rahman, principal of the college, acknowledging facts said the work for reconstruction of the Lawn Tennis Court at cost of taka 4 lakhs continuing inside the botanical garden premises cutting a Mahogany tree. Both the lawn tennis court, botanical garden, green house were existed there since long days in abandoned condition. So college authority decided to reconstruct the tennis court for recreation and health activities of college teachers.
Barishal Reporters Unity (BRU) and Barishal Sangskritik Sangathan Samonoy Parishad called to stop reconstruction of Lawn Tennis Court at botanical garden premises of the college immediately and instead of that to develop the garden and green house for the sake of research of the students and teachers .
