Pagla Kanai Smriti Sangrakkhon Sangsad has organised a three day folk festival at the “Pagla Kanai Complex”, Berbari in Jhenaidah on the occasion of the 205th birth anniversary of the mystic bard. The festival was inaugurated on March 9 and it ended on Wednesday.
Pagla Kanai was born into a peasant family at Nebutala village in Jhenaidah in 1810.
Julkar Niyon, UNO (Upazila Nirbahi Officer) of Sadar Upazila, and local cultural personalities placed wreathes at the tomb of Pagla Kanai at Berbari on March 9. A discussion was also held on the poet’s life and his immense contributions to our cultural arena.
Besides the programme, different cultural programmes and various types of games were also held in three day festival. The cultural activities featured musical soiree, recitation and various types of local games.
According to Pagla Kanai Smriti Sangrakkhon Sangsad said “Self-learned Pagla Kanai is popular for developing a Jari form titled ‘Dhuajari’. He successfully used myths such as Radha-Krishna, Monosha-Mongala as well as contemporary social issues of his time.
Pagla Kanai used to lead life as per the rules and regulations of Islam. Some of his songs reflect his belief in Islamism like “O Momin Musalman, Koro Ei Akbarer Kam; Gelo Din Shuno Musalman Momin, Poro Rabbil Alamin; Salam Salam Salam Rakhi Desher Pai, Paila Salam Kori Ami Khodar Dargai.”
