Staff Reporter :
The High Court has said workers of the Rural Electrification Board (REB) and Palli Bidyut Samity cannot form trade unions.
A bench of Justice Jubayer Rahman Chowdhury and Justice Zinat Ara passed the verdict on Sunday.
A section of employees of Palli Bidyut Samity filed a writ petition in 2015 seeking the court’s directions to form a trade union. Later, the High Court issued a rule. Disposing of that rule, the High Court pronounced the verdict on Sunday. “Because of the types of employees and their nonprofit nature, the REB and Palli Bidyut Samity do not fall under the definition of organisations employees of which are allowed to form trade unions,” the court said.
The High Court has said the government’s electrification efforts could be hampered if employees of these companies that are run with subsidies from the government get involved in trade unions.
Syed AT Muzaffar Ali filed the writ petition naming three, including the law ministry and the labour ministry, defendants in the writ.
