The new Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Md Shafiqul Islam has said that he will take over the charge of an Officer-in-Charge (OC) in the DMP area in case of necessary.
He said it in a press briefing at the DMP Media Center on the city’s Minto Road on Sunday.
The DMP chief said, “If members of public complain that they are not treated fairly and do not get the desired service in police stations under my jurisdiction, then I will take over the charge of OC in that police station. I will personally attend to the needs of some of the citizens.”
He said, all activities of the police stations must be monitored to guard against harassment. “After taking over charge, I immediately met all
Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and OCs posted in Dhaka. They have been given necessary and strict instructions regarding monitoring,” the DMP Commissioner said.
“We must ensure that ordinary people are not afraid of law enforcement officials,” he said.
He further said, “We must also ensure that any person can file a case or lodge a general diary without becoming harassed or victimized at police stations. The feeling of getting co-operation from the police must be invoked in the person when he leaves the police station.”
“We have to keep an eye on the police stations so that no one becomes a victim of harassment, extortion, or needs to resort to bribery in exchange of service. Actions will be taken if any complaint is lodged against any person,” he said.
