Save Sitalakhya from pollution
Owing to the fall in underground water levels, WASA has been purifying surface water from Sitalakhya river to maintain supply to Dhaka dwellers. Excess pollution from industrial waste has been smearing the river’s colour black, giving it a pungent smell. Most of the waste chemicals dissolve into the water and they cannot be removed through the refining process of WASA water treatment plants. Civilians are made to use this polluted water.
The Department of Environment needs to help WASA with the supply of pure water by imposing fines on industrial units responsible for the water pollution. The fine amount should be significant to bring about a change in the industries’ behaviour.
